What's in it for me?

A good question to ask is, “Why should you learn about participles?” The reasons lie in the following examples.
Look at the following sentences. Why are they more difficult to read?

 

 

1. The King, recognizing the contribution of all senior citizens to the kingdom, sent Robert a telegram congratulating him on his hundredth birthday.
 

2. The United States, having learned about the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, decided to engage in the so-called World War II.

3. Left behind by their deceased parents as a result of AIDS, the children in the village of Nyakagyezi, Uganda are crying for help.
