Continuing abuse of power by Mr. Abhisit Vejajiva in Thailand

Dear friends and colleagues,

In response to the rising death tolls in Thailand (as of today, according to the BBC 22 protesters have been killed by the military and roughly 200 injured), myself and along with a few Thai scholars in Britain are coming up with this signature campaign. We wish to write to the Liberal International, Inter-Parliamentary Union, and Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (which the Democrat Party, the current government of Thailand is a member) to urge them to take action on the excessive uses of forces and abuse of power by PM Abhisit Vejajiva. We plan to release this letter by the end of this month, attempting to collect as much signatures of scholars, human rights activists, and individuals as much as possible.

We write to you calling for your help in the support in the pressure to this government to stop killing the protesters, so that Thailand will move toward the path toward democracy and rule of law. Subject: Continuing abuse of power by Mr. Abhisit Vejajiva in Thailand

Dear Dr. Acosta,

We are a group of concerned scholars, civil society organisations, human rights organisations, students, and individuals who are writing to you to raise your concerns on the recent bloody crackdown by the Democrat Party-led government under Mr. Abhisit Vejajiva. Democrat Party is a member of the Council of Asian Liberal and Democrats (CALD).

There has been confirmed reports by international journalists and rights organisations of the military personnels under the order of Mr. Abhisit firing live ammunitions into the crowd of the about opposition protest group, the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) also known as the “red shirt” resulting in the death of at least 22 unarmed protesters and at least 180 protesters injured, and the number is rising. There are also reports of at least 10 Thai and international journalists being injured via gunshot by the military. There are roughly 10,000 protesters in the site, women and children among them. This adds up to the death tolls in the 10 April 2010 crackdown by the government which claimed the lives of 20 protesters and more than 800 peoples injured.

In the past two months, Thailand has been ruled under the grip of the emergency decree giving the absolute power to the Prime Minister to summon and arrest anyone critical of the government. On 13 May 2010, Mr. Abhisit has signed an order in imposing State of Emergency in 15 provinces in the country in an attempt to allow Thai peoples to join the protest site in Bangkok. Human Rights Watch has reported that hundreds of opposition politicians, student activists, media workers, and individuals have been summoned by the government for questioning. Furthermore, more than 1,030 political and news website have been summarily shut down under the order of Mr. Abhisit.

We therefore are writing to you to express our utmost concerns about the recent bloody crackdown and for you to take immediate possible action with the leadership of the Democrat Party. The atrocities and excessive uses of forces to prohibit those voicing opposition to his government as committed under Mr. Abhisit will undermined the principle of respect for human rights and democracy as respected by CALD. Governments cannot simply shoot guns at its citizens who think different than them.

Furthermore, the continuing abuse of power by Mr. Abhisit is a direct contradiction to the charter of CALD and its Manifesto for Transparency, Accountability and Access to Information which calls for CALD members that “CALD member party must be in consistent with its policies of good governance when it is in power”.

It saddens me greatly to see the streets I have walked and driven on so many times to now run with the blood of the innocent. I am seeing the “City of Angels” (Bangkok) now being stained with the blood of those who love their country. Will Bangkok become the “Killing Fields” as was the fate of Cambodia when under the control of a Mad Man, a military man, who claimed he was doing it for the good of the country---and set up on trying to destroy all who would speak against him.

Is this where Bangkok and Thailand are headed? Our Military overthrew our elected officials under the excuse of corruption and for the good of the people---there was the promise of new elections. But when the elections were finally held, the military would not let elected officials take their positions, and appointed those who they wanted.

It was obvious that the military feared our elected officials, as they acted in a cowardly way in their initial takeover-----waiting until the elected Prime Minister was out of the country on official duty. Have they no honor in their actions? Now, the military kills unarmed children. A ten (10) year old boy is shot -----is this the action of a military under control or one that is gone mad. How long does take before brothers are ordered to shoot their own families. Is this what Thailand is becoming?

The military, who said they did it for the people, have seized personal assets, detained people without trials, shot and killed those who would object, and not keep the promises that they made, and have free elections. Is this what we, the people of Thailand, want to see happen to our country? Thailand was rapidly rising above a third world county but now we are rapidly falling back into the dark ages----other countries now fear to invest or come to Thailand with the Military in control. As every military controlled country suffers from the same corruption that infects the power hungry ego driven military powers.

The military generals in charge now must fear the will of the people, if they are willing to order their soldiers to shoot and kill unarmed people who speak against their actions. Must we kill our fellow countrymen in such a senseless manner? This is truly a dark time for our country----we have for centuries been know as a country of kindness, love, and the land of smiles………it saddens me to see the blood of my fellow Thai as it flows in the streets, not from a foreign enemy, but from the Mad Men of our military. I ask that the military keep its promise and allow free and unobstructed elections, with the United Nations to monitor the election procedure.

If the Military objects or has excuses----What are they hiding? Perhaps they are lining their pockets with the blood stained money of the fallen and have become drunk on the power. Is this the way we want to live? Where is the King? Does he not care about his people?

Abhisit ordered snipers to kill unarmed civilians and a red-shirt-supporting gen.

Thailand's capital has become a virtual war zone because of Abhisit's lack of respect for the people's will and humanrights.

Abhisit has become a complete tyran.

For more red-shirted protesters were killed last night and a humanright officer has reportedly just been killed minutes ago (May 14, 7:16 p.m. Thailand time).

As the red-shirted protesters are gaining popularity, the royalists are also campaigning for the love for the monarch and the need to protect the monarchy.
So much has been done in Thailand to trigger hatred against the red-shirted Thais so that the Abhisit adminstration could one day rightfully kill the protesters in the name of the love for the monarch. This same brutal trick was observed during the October 6, 1976.

Abhisit, coming into power via a militarily-supported shortcut, clearly is not accepted by a significant number of Thais across the country;

Abhisit cannot even stay in his own residence, nor can he visit 90% of the provinces in Thailand;

Abhisit's tyrannical deeds have led to over 20 lives and injuries of thousands; many more?

The majority of people could only be decided by voting, and that's exactly what Abhisit has been trying to avoid; What a cunning and shameless loser!

What little legitimacy the government of Abhisit Vejjajiva had is evaporating. Until blood was spilt on the streets of Bangkok last weekend, Mr Abhisit could at least claim that his administration was preparing for a peaceful resolution of Thailand’s long-festering political tensions. Now, with 21 people dead, with a discredited constitution still in place and with red-shirted protesters still feeling disenfranchised, that claim looks increasingly thin. What is more, the situation could deteriorate further. The red-shirted supporters of Thaksin Shinawatra, ousted from power in a 2006 coup d’etat, have hardened their negotiating stance. The danger is of worse clashes and an escalating death toll.

That is a tragedy Thailand can, and must, avoid. The army must resist any temptation to do what it has done too many times before: resolve democratic strife through military intervention. Mr Abhisit should call an election as quickly as possible. He must do so knowing full well that his chances of winning are slim. Victory is more likely to go to parties aligned with Mr Thaksin, whose deeply flawed premiership nevertheless revolutionised Thai politics by enfranchising the poor from the north and north-east. That genie cannot be put back in the bottle.
Thailand’s deep political rift will be extremely difficult to heal. The red-shirts must play a part by assuring the government that free and fair elections are possible. Mr Abhisit has spoken – with some justification – of a climate of fear that makes it difficult for pro-government politicians to campaign in red-shirt strongholds. If the opposition is willing to create the climate for smooth elections, Thailand’s more conservative forces must be prepared to abide by the results.

The king could help by calling for all Thai’s to accept the will of the majority. After Mr Thaksin was removed by military force, two prime ministers loyal to him were ousted by what appeared to be a selective application of the constitution. That sense of arbitrariness must end. If Thais can move beyond a colour-coded schism that has seen politics fought on the streets, they might just discover there are as many things that unite as divide them. If they cannot, the future for Thailand looks bleak indeed.
